Joe Anderson Display Club
Zanna, the Sales Manager at Persimmon Golf, is accustomed to her boss announcing the acquisition of another ancient hickory club or some unusual item of golfing memorabilia, but even she was amazed at this latest addition to the collection. The club, as demonstrated by David Anderson of the wonderful Kingarrock Golf Course, has a solid persimmon wood head in proportion to the 9' 6'' long ebonised hickory shaft, and the original grip. The head has a leading edge of ram's horn and simply bears the legend 'Perth'.
The history is interesting. This remarkable club was made by Joe Anderson in the early 1920's as a demonstration of his craft and was on display in the window of his long-established sports shop in St John Street, Perth until the shop finally closed in the 1960's. Joe Anderson represented Scotland as a talented sportsman and golfer, becoming a skilled and respected clubmaker whose clubs were in great demand far and wide. Joe's daughter, Jessie, was one of the best-known and talented players of her generation, who, as Jessie Valentine, won the British Ladies Championship three times and represented GB and Ireland in the Curtis Cup on seven occasions. Having retired from golf, Jessie became much involved in running the shop from 1958, but it is doubtful that even she attempted a round with this club.
John England, MD of Persimmon Golf, says 'Whilst our own clubs provide the golfer with a high-performance alternative to mass-produced metal drivers and fairway woods, it is items such as the Joe Anderson display club that constantly remind us of the wonderful history and craftsmanship behind this great game. Long may it last.'
