Real Woods are back
The major golf brands regularly discover yet another 'amazing advance' in clubhead material and design - 'Transform your game, gain 30 yards, reduce your handicap!' Market pressure amongst the major brands ensures an endless supply of new product to replace the last essential piece of equipment.
FACT: Over the last quarter-century, despite the titanium/composite, weight-adjustable, 'superclubs', average handicaps have remained the same.
So why has the best ever clubhead material been so conveniently forgotten? Why don't the major brands use persimmon wood? Because it's expensive. Forget performance, it's about profit.
FACT: Independent tests conducted by both the USGA and Golf Labs in California compared the relative performance of persimmon and titanium drivers. One found persimmon longer, the other titanium, but neither variant exceeded 2% or so. Persimmon, however, is more accurate than metal, having greater 'gear effect' than any other clubhead material.
The main gains from golf technology are to the shaft and ball - we benefit from these advances as much as any clubmaker. With the right combination of persimmon head and modern shaft, you will improve both performance and your enjoyment of the game. You will have a club that will stand the test of time, that feels like no other club you have ever owned.
Bin the tin - real woods are back.
